How SMBs can gain real value from the Cloud without overspending. GDC Services POV

Small and medium-sized businesses often rush into the cloud expecting flexibility and cost-efficiency — yet many end up facing rising bills and growing security concerns. On a recent webinar, Chris Ellis, CEO of GDC Services, spoke with Sergey Stromilo, the company’s Head of Multi-Skill Infrastructure and Applications Management, on how to regain control of cloud spending, strengthen security, and thoughtfully adopt modern AI tools.

Chris Ellis: Many companies move to the cloud expecting stability and cost savings — yet the bills keep rising. Why does this happen?

Sergey Stromilo: We hear this all the time. The cloud offers enormous flexibility, but that flexibility works both ways. If the environment is even slightly unmanaged, costs start to grow. For example, virtual machines that are used only a few days a month continue running 24/7. These “small things” accumulate, and the final invoice becomes a surprise.

Chris: Where exactly do companies go wrong?

Sergey: Usually it is a combination of small overlooked details. Teams deploy workloads quickly, multiple people create resources, and no one tracks usage consistently. Without structure and governance, the environment grows chaotically — and so does the bill.

Chris: Could we in GDC Services possibly help them fix this?

Sergey: We run what we call the Cloud Cost Clinic — a collaborative workshop with the client. We analyze their cloud environment, workloads, usage patterns, and help establish simple rules, automation, and dashboards. No need for a large FinOps team — just practical discipline and visibility.

Chris: So, companies don’t need major FinOps investments?

Sergey: Exactly. Our approach focuses on small, effective actions that anyone can follow — enough to cut costs and maintain control.

Security: Should SMBs Be Worried?

Chris: Should small and medium-sized businesses really be concerned about data security, or is this mostly an enterprise issue?

Sergey: Everyone should be concerned. SMBs have become a preferred target for attackers. Governments are introducing new regulations and standards that apply to all organizations, regardless of size.

Chris: What affordable security options does Azure offer?

Sergey: Azure provides a wide range of built-in protections: backup solutions, multi-region redundancy, site recovery, immutable storage — essentially enterprise-grade security without enterprise-level cost. This dramatically reduces downtime: what used to require days or weeks can now be resolved in hours.

Chris: Many SMB IT teams are overwhelmed, with no CISO or SOC. So how can they realistically manage security?

Sergey: Azure’s out-of-the-box security tools provide full-scale protection without needing dozens of separate products. They also cover all devices — mobiles, laptops, desktops, servers, even SaaS applications. Everything is combined into a single pane of glass, making it manageable for small teams.

AI and Copilots: Hype or Opportunity?

Chris: Should SMBs care about Copilots and new AI tools, or is this just hype? What do you think?

Sergey: Artificial intelligence is already part of modern reality. Companies should start experimenting — even on a small scale. With Copilot Studio, organizations can build custom assistants to simplify workflows without major investments.

Chris: So the best approach is to start small and expand gradually?

Sergey: Exactly. Many clients already have access to basic Copilot features. They can begin experimenting now, find valuable use cases, and scale as needed. It’s an additional pair of hands — a practical assistant.

Chris: So, to summarize, integrated cloud tools already offer strong disaster recovery, backup, and security features. SMBs should stay aware of AI developments and adopt them at a comfortable pace. And for those who want guidance, GDC Services provides Cloud Cost Clinics, security score reviews, cloud usage assessments, and backup readiness checks.

Audience Q&A

Question: How will your company help us align cloud initiatives with our business needs and long-term strategy?

Chris: Alignment requires ongoing dialogue. Our cloud assessments begin by revisiting the company’s original migration goals, understanding how the business has evolved, and determining whether the cloud setup still meets current objectives. Flexibility and continuous communication are key.

Question: Do GDC Services specialists work with all major cloud platforms?

Sergey: Yes. Our primary expertise is Azure, but we also work with AWS, Google Cloud, and even less common platforms such as Alibaba Cloud in Europe.
