Challenge
Customer launched initiative to migrate all content from outdated version of SharePoint on-Prem to SharePoint Online (SPO) platform.
Migrating content is not straightforward activity, many customized libraries need to be built, records to retain history and versions, and high number of Intranet sites to be rebuilt into new structure in SharePoint Online.
Customer lacked resource to lead the project and asked GDC for IT Project Manager to fulfil this internal role.
Solution
GDC provided Senior IT Project Manager with extensive experience in running complex projects in corporation environment.
IT Project Manager, working with customer resources, and with customer’s 3rd party Suppliers, performed following major activities:

Thorough investigation and cleansing activities of libraries to reduce the scope of migration.

Analyses and simplification of functional requirements for customized libraries.

Overseeing supplier activities on building customizations for libraries in SPO, then leading User Acceptance Testing.

Negotiating downtime with business, then managing migration phases.

Listing and cleansing Intranet sites, preparation for migration to SPO.

Promoting new Intranet sites design to business owners, then migrating sites to SPO.
Results

Cleansing of historic content and Intranet structure, to allow fresh setup on new platform, followed by governance model redefined to help day-to-day support.

Migration of all content and Intranet sites to SPO, enabling all advantages of cloud services.
- Enabled savings for customer: simplified solution lowered migration cost, less customizations mean less day-to-day support costs, shutting down or running on minimum resources legacy SharePoint saves monthly costs for licenses and storage.
